The most obvious and primary minus point while building a responsive website is that they take up more time. Obviously, there is cut throat competition in the market and websites need less preparation time, few resources to build and less testing efforts.
Different devices still remain different:
It is a myth that one can simply build a website that can work equally on all sort and size of devices. Though you will need a single set of code to run your website regarding the same content and structure, but then all the devices require a different way of thinking. Users from different devices will be using your website differently with different codes and context.
Different devices offer different interactions:
Hypothetically, the mobile version not only differs from your desktop version but also in practical aspects. Interactions and components that look fine of one platform might be irrelevant and not work the way they should on another device. It might be due to the platform or the size or may be the way we interact. While on the latter we use pointer and mouse, for the former device we have just fingers.
Scalable images lose details:
Scalable images are hard to acquire and work with. They are prone to lose the details and meaning. The problem here is thus not the scaling but its outcomes. The cropping image is always not the best options but them your screen size greatly influence the way you can alter the image.

Navigation is one of the most vital parts of any website and while you deal with a desktop you can get them layered and segmented where as on smaller screen you will find limited space and thus, a greater challenge. The thumb rule here is to strike a fine balance to access the information and lucrative designs.
Limited Support:
Responsive websites work in association with media queries to determine the size of the device screen and then they display the output. However, the problem here is that old browsers do not recognize such media queries. No matter how small portion they acquire, they are still a big challenge.
These are some of the challenges that need to be tackled, however when compared to the advantages and overall results, they can be overlooked.
